Literacy - Iron Man

We are currently reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The children are thoroughly enjoying this book, and have produced some oustanding work as a result.  We have a class display of some of their work, which includes News Reports and letters they have written from a character in the book.  They also enjoyed making a collage of the Iron Man which takes pride of place on our display!

Maths

The children have enjoyed learning different methods of multiplication and division in Maths.  The three ways of multiplying we have been looking at are grid, short and partition. In division we have leant how to use arrays, repeated subtraction and the bus stop methods.

Topic

Our current topic is Victorian Oldham.  This is proving to be a fascinating experience for the children, and they have especially enjoyed researching on the ipads how children were employed to work in the cotton mills in the Oldham area.  In class today, we were looking at St Anne's Church and how it came to be built at its current location, and how it started up from a little room in a cottage in the town.

Science

We are looking at Plants and Blossom in Science at the moment in class. We will be conducting an experiment shortly, to find out what conditions are needed in order for plants to grow and thrive.  I'm sure the children will find this both interesting and fun!

World Book Day!

As you know for World Book Day the entire school dressed up as bees! We had a particular focus on the Bee and Me book. We wrote a diary entry and in the afternoon we linked this with our Science topic of plants and discusses the importance of bees in the reproduction of plants. We sadly found that honey bees are rapidly decreasing in this country due to use of pesticides etc. So we worked as a class to create a campaign song 'SAVE THE BEES!' to the tune of we will rock you. Have a look at our music video, we had lots of fun making it!

Internet Safety Day!

At the beginning of this half term we had a special Internet Safety Day, in which we discussed how to stay safe when using the internet. We discussed how easy it can be for information, messages and images to travel around the internet. We discussed use of social media and how we should monitor what we are sharing. To symbolise this we used a big ball of string to show how a message can be passed from one person to another, then another and another, and so on until lots of people are now able to access the information.
