Dear Parents,

Welcome back

In English we are exploring a book called Zeraffa Giraffa, it is a true story of a giraffe who was sent as a gift from Egypt to Paris. This links nicely with our topic all about Africa. Children will have the opportunity to write letters, information texts about giraffes and stories.

The maths focus will be money, measurement, place value, fractions and addition and subtraction.

Our topic will be: what would life be like in Kenya? We will look at geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom, and of a small area of Africa. We will explore African art and look at their way of living. In PE, we will look at African dancing.

Vocabulary will include: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shop

Children have PE every Tuesday and Friday. A full PE kit MUST be in school at all times; yellow t-shirt, black shorts and pumps.  This half term, the children will take part in Multi skills and Gymnastics.

Homework will be given out on a Thursday and should be back in on the following Tuesday. This half term, the focus is on maths arithmetic. I will send home a different quiz each week, please work through this with your child and support when needed. These tests are to prepare children for their SATs and get them used to the layout and format.

Spellings for this half term have been given out, there are also a copy in the pink homework book and are on the website on the year two class pages.

Guided Reading is every Tuesday and your child will have the opportunity to change their library book every Friday. Please comment in your child’s homework diary when you have listened to them read.  Children should bring their homework diaries into school every day and must be signed weekly.

We appreciate your co-operation, as we feel it’s important that both home and school work together in order to give your child the best possible education.

Also, if you ever have any comments, questions or concerns, we are available for phone calls and meetings (by appointment please) each day before and after school.

I would also like to apologise for not explaining that the first questions on the Maths SATs papers (half term homework) are oral so children couldn’t answer them!

Thank you for your support,

Miss Humphreys
