Spring 2 Newsletter

Year One Parent Newsletter Spring 2 2018

We are halfway through the year! Here is a look into this half term’s learning.

R.E:

We will be learning about the importance of friendship, what makes a good friend and then about the friends of Jesus. We will learn about The Good Samaritan through drama and then writing. We will then move onto Good Friday and explore the sadness leading up to Easter Sunday.

Topic:

Why can’t Penguins live in the Desert?

This links beautifully with our Science work. We will explore hot and cold countries, habitats, why people holiday to certain destinations, looking at maps of the world (globes too) and naming the seven continents of the world.

Science

Why are Tigers not like Human?

We will learn all the different classification of animals. habitats, babies, how to take care of an animal and to learn about us as humans being animals too. There is a lot of technical vocabulary in this unit. I have attached all of the words and definition so the children can reinforce their learning at home too.

Our class trip to Blackpool Zoo supports all of this learning.

English:

We will start by writing instructions which we couldn’t quite fit in last half term. This will be followed by report writing about pets and another one on penguins. We need to keep writing, developing our handwriting and improve our spelling. The children have their spellings

Guided reading:

Guided reading will take place on Tuesday for all groups. Homework diaries need to be signed for this day and will also be signed by teachers too. This is very valuable source of communication.

Class reading books will be changed on a Tuesday during this session.

Maths:

In maths, we will be learning sequences, adding, subtracting, finding the missing middle number, weighing and reading a scale.

Homework

Homework will be given on a Wednesday and should handed in by the following Tuesday – feel free to hand it in earlier if it’s completed. Occasionally additional topic/science homework may also be given.

It is very important that all homework is completed on time and to the same standard that we expect in school, in order to make it worthwhile. We value your support with this. We will check if homework is completed and if your child misses their homework they will be reminded to complete it for the next day. Please sign your child’s diary to show they have read at home.

Bookbags

Please ensure your child brings their bookbag every day. That way reading books are always in school and so are their diaries. It will also help stop the children losing letters etc.

Percy Panda

Your child will get the opportunity to take home Percey Panda our class toy. Please join in by completing a diary and including photographs and pictures. It's a fantastic chance for your child to speak and read out their diary with their friends.

PE

PE is on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child has the correct kit (yellow top, black shorts and pumps) Please also pack an outdoor PE kit for this term (hoody/tracksuit/ trainers). Lessons will be both indoor and outdoor.

Please see website for diary dates and events and more information on the curriculum and what the children have been up to: http://www.stannesrc.oldham.sch.uk/
