Spring 1 2018

I hope you have had a restful and peaceful Christmas. Happy New Year to you all.

R.E:

We will be learning about our family, our school family, our Church family and God’s family. We will explore how it feels to be a member of it. We will learn about different celebrations that we experience within the Church and will look in depth at Baptism and Godparents.

Topic:

Who were famous when my Mum and Dad were little?

We will learn and find out more about Princess Diana and Nelson Mandela. The main focus is what people thought of them for their work. Can we be more like them? How does it feel to be discriminated against (Huge PSHE link into equality against, gender, race, religion etc) and what life was like for Nelson Mandela. How are the two role models the same? Have these two people changed our life even though we didn’t know them?

English:

We will start the half term with writing explanations. We will labels parts of the body and discuss how our bodies move. We will link it into our writing including titles, subheadings, diagrams and labels.

Our next writing will be ‘instructions’ and we will be reading them, following them and writing them. We will link this into our computing where we will become computer programmers by coding.

Guided reading:

Guided reading will take place on Tuesday for all groups. Homework diaries need to be signed for this day and will also be signed by teachers too. This is very valuable source of communication.

Class reading books will be changed on a Tuesday during this session.

Maths:

In maths, we will be interpreting graphs and pictograms and creating our own. We will be recognising coins and adding up the totals in money boxes and jars. We will have a pretend shop where the chn will be counting out money to ‘buy’ things. We will continue to add and subtract by using a number line.

Science

We will continue to learn about the season of Winter and consider changes we can see. We will go on a Winter walk and produce artwork too. We will consider why the nights are dark and the days are shorter than in Summer. We will explore dark and shadows and we will create shadow puppets.

Homework

Homework will be given on a Wednesday and should handed in by the following Tuesday – feel free to hand it in earlier if it’s completed. Occasionally additional topic/science homework may also be given.

It is very important that all homework is completed on time and to the same standard that we expect in school, in order to make it worthwhile. We value your support with this. We will check if homework is completed and if your child misses their homework they will be reminded to complete it for the next day. If it is still not handed in they will lose their rainbow badge until it is completed. (In line with school policy)

Please sign your child’s diary to show they have read at home.

Bookbags

Please ensure your child brings their bookbag every day. That way reading books are always in school and so are their diaries. It will also help stop the children losing letters etc.

Percy Panda

Your child will get the opportunity to take home Percey Panda our class toy. Please join in by completing a diary and including photographs and pictures. It's a fantastic chance for your child to speak and read out their diary with their friends.

Spellings:

Spellings will be given on a Friday to be learnt for the following Friday. The spelling test result will be recorded in the homework diary and any mistakes on the test will be highlighted. These are tricky but by writing a couple out every night your child will become more confident in using them.

PE

PE is on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child has the correct kit (yellow top, black shorts and pumps) Please also pack an outdoor PE kit for this term (hoody/tracksuit/ trainers). Lessons will be both indoor and outdoor.

Please see website for diary dates and events and more information on the curriculum and what the children have been up to: http://www.stannesrc.oldham.sch.uk/

Here are the ‘Rainbow Rules’ that we will remind and expect all of our children to follow every day.

  • I will be safe.
  • I will respect others.
  • I will be in the right place at the right time.
  • I will co-operate.
  • I will control my feelings and emotions.
  • I will communicate appropriately and use the correct language.

Thank you for your help and support.
